Duomo is one of the most famous cathedrals not only in Italy but in the whole world. This gothic cathedral was begun by Galeazzo Visconti III (1351-1402), first duke of Milan, in 1386. However, Duomo, consecrated in the 15th-16th century, was not completed until the coronation of Napoleon as king of Italy in 1809.
Milan's Duomo is the fourth-largest church in the world today. The cathedral boast 135 marble spires, a stunning triangular facade, and 3,400-some statues. The interiors are also fascinating and contain the tombs of Giacomo de Medici, two Visconti, and many cardinals and archbishops.
